Posen, MI Hot Tub Damaged After Power Outage

After a massive power outage in Posen, MI, a hot tub no longer seems operational. is this the result of the power outage, or something worse?

Swimming Pool Inspection Services was called out to inspect a hot tub that had sustained severe damage during the winter. Our inspector spoke with the insured, who stated that a winter storm and subsequent power outage had occurred while they were on vacation. When they returned rom vacation, their appliances were flashing and needed to be reset, indicating that a power outage had occurred. As a result, during this time, the water in their hot tub had frozen. Our inspector investigated these claims.

Inspection and Observations

Our inspector performed an inspection of the hot tub and surrounding area, and made the following observations:

  • The breaker had been tripped.
  • Ice had formed into a solid block in the shell.
  • The shell and inside plumbing had cracked.
  • Several of the plumbing fittings were broken.
  • The check valves were ruined.
  • The jet fittings and equipment were damaged.
  • The hot tub was approximately 8 years old, seats 7-8 people and has 35+ jets.
  • The hot tub appeared to have been well maintained prior to the incident.

Analysis of Posen, MI Hot Tub Inspection

Our inspector concluded that the only thing that could be salvaged on the hot tub was the top side control panel. It would cost more to refurbish the unit than to simply replace it. Our inspector explained that when water is allowed to freeze in the hot tub, it expands, and can crack both the shell and the plumbing. This is what happened in this hot tub, causing irreparable damage.

Cause of Loss

It was the opinion of our inspector that there had been a power outage at the property, which caused the water in the hot tub to freeze. Expansion from the ice resulted in severe damage to the hot tub. The entire unit would need to be replaced.
