Crown Point, IN Above-Ground Pool Inspection

After a wind storm swept through Crown Point, IN, Swimming Pool inspection Services was asked to inspect an above-ground pool that may have been damaged from the wind. Our inspector visited the property in question and spoke with the insured. The insured explained that there had been a big storm that pulled the cover up and down. The insured explained that when he went outside the next day, the pool had lost about 50% of its water, the rails were cracked, and the cover was in the pool. The insured stated that the pool was just over 10 years old.

Observations in Swimming Pool Inspection

Our inspector performed a thorough inspection of the pool and surrounding areas, and made the following observations:

  • The cover was floating in the pool.
  • The pool was only half full of water.
  • The liner was faded.
  • There were no holes or tears in the liner.
  • There was rust near the skimmer.
  • Some rails were cracked.
  • The pool wall was being pushed in by the surrounding earth.
  • The pool walls were severely compromised by rust.
  • There was no evidence of erosion by water damage to the surrounding areas of the pool.

Analysis of Swimming Pool Observations

Our inspector noted that the water level was about 6 inches below the rust areas, indicating the rusted areas did not cause the water level to become so low. However, it appeared that the pool had been rusting for years.

The faded liner was the result of sun and chemical bleaching. The liner appeared aged, but was still intact and holding water. The pool walls were severely compromised by rust and our inspector projected they would only last a couple more years.

When the weight of ice or snow becomes heavy on top of a pool cover, it displaces water by pushing the water up and over the sides of the pool over a period of time.

While the pool is repairable, our inspector noted that as it only has about two more years of life remaining, as well as the fact that the rails would not be repairable, total replacement was recommended.

Cause of Loss in Crown Point, IN Pool Inspection

It was the opinion of our inspector that the damage to the pool was caused by excessive weight on the cover, most likely from ice or snow.
