Hot Tub Damaged by Lightning in Cottage Grove, MN

Swimming Pool Inspection Services was called out to inspect a Cottage Grove, MN hot tub that had become damaged. It was asserted by the insured that lightning had caused the damage. Our inspector visited the property in question and spoke with the insured, who stated that he came home to find that the tree in the backyard had been struck by lightning and was cracked down the middle. The spa was not operational and the GFI was tripped. The insured then reset the GFI, but the spa would not warm up and the jets would not turn on. The insured stated that he then called the insurance company.

Hot Tub Inspection Observations

Our inspector performed a thorough inspection of the hot tub, tree, and surrounding areas, and made the following observations:

• The hot tub was purchased January 27, 2002, and was well-maintained.
• Water was present in the hot tub at the recommended level.
• The exterior of the hot tub showed no visible damage.
• The cabinet, where the main board resides showed no visible damage.
• Burn marks and scorched wiring were present on the interior main board.
• The heater connection was damaged.
• The heater and flow sensors were damaged.
• The jet pumps were tested and read at an extremely high level.
• The tree, approximately 15 feet away from the hot tub, was damaged and split.

Analysis of Hot Tub Inspection Observations

Our inspector noted that the main board, wiring, heater connection, heater sensor and flow sensors all needed to be replaced from burn damage. In addition, the resistance level of the jet pumps was too high, indicating that they were damaged, and would need to be replaced.
