Quarryville, PA Above-Ground Pool Damaged Due to Melting Ice

Swimming Pool Inspection Services was called out to inspect an above-ground swimming pool that had sustained damage during the winter and early spring moths.

One of our licensed swimming pool inspectors visited the property in question in Quarryville, PA and spoke with the homeowner, who explained that the above-ground pool wall had bent, and that the liner had holes in it.

During the inspection, our inspector made the following observations:

• The pool was empty at the time it was inspected.
• The wall of the above ground pool had bent.
• There were two holes in the liner.
• The skimmer was cracked.

Analysis of Swimming Pool Damage

In addition to the above observations, our inspector commented that as the frozen pool water began to thaw, the ice shifted and caused the pool wall to buckle. This in turn would have caused the pool to lose water, affecting the stability of the pool cover and causing a void between the pool liner and cover support. This void caused the liner to stretch and because of the extreme cold, it failed and tore in two places.

Cause of Damage and Repair Estimates

Our inspector was able to determine that the extreme cold during the winter months is what caused the wall to buckle and the liner to tear. In many cases like this, it is easier to just replace an above-ground pool altogether. However, our inspector provided a guideline for repairing this pool and making is operational again:

• The wall can be straightened out to its original position. Although one would be able to tell that it had been bent, it should not be an eyesore due to its location.
• Once the liner is removed and the wall position corrected, a new liner can be installed.
• A new skimmer will need to be installed.

Our inspector estimated that to re-bend the wall back to its original position, install two new liner tracks, install a new bead liner, and install a new simmer would cost around $1,500.00. To fill the pool with water would be an addition $425.00. With $90.00 in sales tax, the estimated total for repairing this pool was $2,015.00.

Considering how much replacing an above-ground pool can cost, this is a great estimate for the homeowner’s insurance company to work with.
