After a rough winter, Swimming Pool Inspection Services was called out to investigate a swimming pool in Mt. Holly, NJ that had sustained damage. The insured explained that there was damage to the both the pool and the surrounding deck area, and hypothesized that the damage may have been caused by the weight of ice and snow that piled up on the pool and deck during the winter.

Swimming Pool Inspection Observations

After speaking with the insured about the state of the pool, our inspector moved on to the inspection, in which he made the following observations:

• The pool liner had been removed and the sand base was exposed.
• The pool wall was split open.
• The pool was a 15′ x 30’ oval shape and was at least 15 years old.
• The aluminum pool wall was corroded.

Analysis of Swimming Pool and Deck Damage

After inspecting the pool and deck area, our inspector was able to determine the cause of damage to the pool. Our inspector noted that the pool wall had split from the bottom up, and that the split was likely caused by pressure that had been put on the severely corroded pool wall.

The corrosion was caused by the acid in the ground and would have occurred over a period of years. Because of this observation, our inspector was able to determine that the damage to the pool wall was not caused by ice and snow. If water weight was left on the pool and deck, it may have sped up the structural damage to the pool, but ultimately, our inspector did not feel that ice and water weight could be the sole cause of the damage.

Due to the severe damage to both the pool and the deck area, the pool will need to be entirely replaced, and the deck will need to be removed around the area of the pool and replaced after a new pool has been installed.

Cause of Loss in Mt. Holly, NJ Pool Inspection

Our inspector determined that the damage was caused by years of corrosion and disintegration to the pool. Because of the advanced age of the pool, our inspector felt that years of wear and tear were the main cause of the collapse of the pool.
